NEES Research & Earthquake Engineering Practice:
Strengthening the Connections

There are two positive trends reshaping our response to seismic events: the earthquake engineering community has made great design gains while the NSF-supported NEES Collaboration and NEES Research programs are generating unprecedented opportunities to expand our understanding of earthquake and building dynamics. This year's NEES Annual Meeting provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to learn from one another and generate an even bigger impact.

Each day begins with a plenary covering topics including research needs, new NEES research, and advances in experimental operations. Afternoons are devoted to informative breakout sessions that will get you up to speed on current research, walk you through implementation strategies, and alert you to issues that may shape your future work. Plus, new spotlight sessions will give both researchers and practitioners an interactive opportunity to explore key earthquake engineering issues.

Presentations will include:
  • Leveraging Tsunami Research: Wave Loading on Residential Structures with Earthquake and Hurricane Applications (John Van de Lindt, Colorado State University)
  • Remote Participation in NEES Experimental Research: a Researcher's Experience with Telepresence Tools (Sri Sritharan, Iowa State University)
  • UB-NCS Equipment-Dynamic Testing Protocol: Seismic Fragility of Nonstructural Partition Walls and Medical Equipment (Gilberto Mosqueda, University at Buffalo)
  • Application of an Experimental Software Framework For Rapid Local and Geographically Distributed Hybrid Simulations (Andreas Schellenberg, University of California at Berkeley)
  • Landslide Tsunami Generator Experiments (Hermann Fritz, Georgia Institute of Technology)
  • Distributed Model Updating Using Wireless Sensors Integrated with NEES (Jerome P. Lynch and Andrew Zimmerman, University of Michigan)
  • The Spectrum of Tools and Resources Provided by NEESit (Lelli Van Den Einde, NEESit)

NEES 5AM Utah Earthquake Country Tour
Join Brigham Young University Professor Emeritus Les Youd on Thursday, June 21st from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for an exciting outing! The tour begins with a visit to the Wasatch fault at the mouth of the canyon near Snowbird, then we will follow the fault through to Salt Lake City. We will lunch at a scenic park then head on to observe the NEES Piles Foundations Projects. The tour will end at SLC Airport at 4:00 p.m. Drivers will provide transportation to airport terminals or will return you to the hotel. $25 per person includes a box lunch to partake in this unique opportunity.
